Overview: Hingham has it all (almost!): proximity to Boston, along with a boat and a commuter rail to get its residents to work; great dining; a beautiful harbor; lovely, tree lined neighborhoods; and a Main Street that Eleanor Roosevelt called “the most beautiful Main Street in America”. The only thing missing from Hingham that you will find in most other South Shore towns is a great beach – residents tend to go to the public beach in Nantasket or buy a beach permit in one of the other adjoining towns. With a population of more than 22,000 people, Hingham is one of the larger towns on the South Shore.
Food/nightlife/shopping: Hingham has the most extensive food and shopping offering on the South Shore. There are at least three separate distinct food neighborhoods in Hingham: the Shipyard, downtown Hingham and the Derby Street Shoppes. From the fine dining at Tosca, The Square Café and Alma Nove to the hearty breakfast at Stars, the pub style pizza at the Liberty Grille and the amazing sandwiches and cheeses at the Bloomy Rind, Hingham is at the center of the South Shore’s food scene.
The Snug, located in downtown Hingham, hosts live music, much of it Irish, several nights a week and has a great selection of beers on tap.
Derby Street Shoppes is a large outdoor mall that has many top-end retail stores. The Shipyard also houses several national and regional retail outlets. Downtown Hingham has many quaint local retailers.
Grocery stores range from Whole Foods, The Fresh Market and The Fruit Center on the upscale side to mainstream retailers like Stop & Shop and Hannaford. Trader Joe’s is in the Shipyard.
In the summer, the bathing beach parking lot doubles as a farmer’s market on Saturdays.
Recreation: Hingham has some wonderful parks, including World’s End, which is one of the jewels of the Trustees of Reservations portfolio. World’s End is a 251 acre peninsula located on Hingham Harbor to one side and Hull to the other. It is a great park for walking, snow-shoeing and bird watching.
Wompatuck State Park is a 4000 acre site of a former munitions depot that houses a 400 site campground, great mountain biking trails and miles of walking trails.
Bare Cove Park is part of the Weymouth Back River Reservation and has many walking trails. It is a very popular dog walking park.
Schools: According to Boston Magazine, in 2013 Hingham’s schools were ranked #38 out of 147 within the Route 495 belt. See rankings HERE.
Clubs: Hingham is home to two private golf clubs, Boston Golf Club and Black Rock Country Club. Boston Golf Club is an exclusive golf-only club, while Black Rock offers a full array of amenities such as a pool and tennis courts. Hingham also boasts a Yacht Club in Hingham Harbor.
Location/Transportation: Hingham is located 18 miles south of Boston. Route 3A winds through the north side of Hingham and the entire South Shore up to the Southeast Expressway. In South Hingham there is access to Route 3. It is about 50 minutes to the Sagamore Bridge to Cape Cod from the Hingham exit.
Hingham connects to Boston via the Greenbush commuter rail, which has two stops in Hingham and runs to South Station in Boston. There is also an MBTA commuter boat out of the Hingham Shipyard which goes to Rowes Wharf in Boston.
