Overview: Scituate is a premier beach town on the South Shore. There are no fewer than six beaches in Scituate. Scituate used to be a summer retreat for many well-heeled Irish-American Bostonians, earning it the nickname of the "Irish Riviera", and has since evolved into a year-round seaside town. It has had an influx of young families in recent years, due to better access to Boston with the re-opening of the Greenbush commuter rail and due to its relative affordability compared to some of the more expensive towns on the South Shore.
Food/nightlife/shopping: Scituate has several quality restaurants, like the Barker Tavern, Oro and Riva. There are also many burger and seafood joints, like JW’s Burger Bar, Jamie’s Pub and the Mill Wharf.
Nightlife is a bit more hopping than Cohasset. The River Club gets some local and national acts in the summer time and the Dogwatch Pub, located in the basement of the Inn at Scituate Harbor, gets live acts most weekends.
Shopping is confined mostly to the Front Street (Scituate Harbor) downtown area with several local retailers and banks.
Recreation: Scituate is a real beach town, with six beaches (including Humarock, which is located in Marshfield but is Scituate property) available to town residents and to outsiders who purchase a beach permit.
Schools: According to Boston Magazine, in 2013 Scituate’s schools were ranked #46 out of 147 within the Route 495 belt. See rankings HERE.
Clubs: Scituate is home to the private Hatherly Golf Club, an 18 hole course near Minot Beach with clay tennis courts. Scituate Country Club is a private 9 hole course located on the North River. There is also a Yacht Club in Scituate with a salt water swimming pool and tennis courts.
Location/Transportation: Scituate is located just southeast of Cohasset, about 25 miles south of Boston. Route 3A is the main road running through Scituate. One needs to travel through Hingham or Norwell to access Route 3.
Scituate connects to Boston via the Greenbush commuter rail, which has two stops in Scituate and runs to South Station in Boston. Some commuters also take the MBTA boat from Hingham, which is about a 15-20 minute drive from Scituate.
